A year of opportunities

Texas Children's Hospital's 2021 Annual Report

A message from
Mark A. Wallace, President and CEO

Welcome to Texas Children’s 2021 Annual Report. This was a remarkable year for our entire organization, and I am incredibly proud of the many ways Texas Children’s continued to grow and expand our care and expertise into new areas, new partnerships and new initiatives.

In 2021, Texas Children’s climbed the U.S. New & World Report rankings to #3 in the nation—as well as #1 in Texas and #1 in the Southwest region—with eight of our subspecialty care areas ranking among the top five. We broke ground on our new pediatric and women’s hospital campus in North Austin. Texas Children’s Adult Congenital Heart Program celebrated the grand opening of our one-of-a-kind facility designed specifically to care for adults with congenital heart disease. And we celebrated the 10th anniversary of Texas Children’s Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute.

In 2021, a task force was created at Texas Children’s to help lead the national movement for pediatric COVID-19 vaccine awareness, education and administration for children ages 12 to 17, and we also continued preparations for future age groups to receive approval.

Our Center for Vaccine Development, led by Drs. Peter Hotez and Maria Elena Bottazzi, developed the first low-cost COVID-19 "people's vaccine," which was technology transferred to vaccine developers in India, Indonesia, and Bangladesh. The vaccine for India received Emergency Use Authorization on December 28, 2021, where it is known as Corbevax. This was done without patents, prioritizing global access to the vaccine over profits.

We performed the groundbreaking 100th spina bifida procedure, and Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women announced a $201 million expansion. To continue setting the standard in pediatric patient care, we embarked on a mission to recruit a top-tier physician leader. After months of searching, we were excited and proud to announce Texas Children's new Pediatrician-in-Chief and Chair of Pediatrics, Dr. Catherine M. Gordon.

In addition to everything we accomplished in 2021, we made it a priority to focus on the needs of our remarkable workforce and spent the year thanking them for the tireless hours, commitment to excellence, and for all they do for our patients and their families every day of every year.

I hope you enjoy revisiting our year of accomplishments through the Texas Children’s 2021 Annual Report. I’m excited to share all that we’ve achieved over the past year, and if there’s one thing Texas Children’s has proved time and time again – it’s that we are just getting started!
