A message from our President and CEO Mark A. Wallace

Welcome to Texas Children’s 2018 Annual Report. I’m Mark Wallace, President and CEO of Texas Children’s Hospital.

2018 was a milestone year for Texas Children’s, highlighted by the opening of the Lester and Sue Smith Legacy Tower at Texas Children's Texas Medical Center Campus. This 25-floor, 645,000 square foot inpatient tower is the new home of our comprehensive critical care services and our world renowned Texas Children’s Heart Center.

We built Lester and Sue Smith Legacy Tower to reinvest in and advance the programs for our most critically ill patients.

With this addition, Texas Children’s bed count has grown to 945, and our system-wide footprint now spans more than 11 million square feet. This expansion helps ensure we will be able to meet the needs of our patients and their families for decades to come.

In the last year alone, we had more than:

  • 37,000 surgeries
  • 152,000 Emergency Center visits
  • 123,000 Urgent Care encounters
  • 6,000 deliveries at Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women
  • 4.3 million patient encounters
  • 438,000 Texas Children’s Health Plan members

Our unique company culture was spotlighted in 2018 with Forbes ranking Texas Children’s no. 11 among the best 300 companies in the nation for women. And one of the world's most recognized brands, the Walt Disney Co., chose Texas Children’s Hospital to launch a $100 million initiative to bring enhanced comfort to hospitalized children and their families. Last fiscal year, Texas Children’s also received Magnet re-designation for nursing excellence and we hosted the Magnet Conference, the largest nursing conference in the nation.

And the list goes on and on. So enjoy visiting our 2018 Annual Report. As you will see, 2018 was a remarkable year for Texas Children’s. We’ve truly never been better.
