Texas Children’s Urgent Care West Campus opens

In September 2018, Texas Children’s Urgent Care opened its 12th clinic and the second one located on the same campus as a Texas Children’s Hospital Emergency Center.

Texas Children’s Urgent Care West Campus is not only a valuable resource for patients and families in West Houston, it helps West Campus Emergency Center staff triage and manage its low acuity population and relieves strain on the Emergency Center during busy times.

“In addition to being a win for our patients, it is a win for the Texas Children’s system as a whole,” said Roula Smith, director of Business Operations for Texas Children’s Urgent Care. “We know that our colleagues in the Emergency Center are able to take care of higher acuity patients and that our lower-acuity patients are receiving care in the right environment for their needs.”

At 4,250 square feet, the clinic has 11 exam rooms, an X-ray room, and a spacious waiting area covered in murals that provide a relaxing, child-friendly atmosphere.

Since opening, the location has seen great success, caring for nearly 3,000 patients in 2018. Approximately one third of the patients are Texas Children’s Health Plan (TCHP) members, and more than half of the patients seen at West Campus Urgent Care arrive at the clinic voluntarily, not through the Emergency Center. In addition, the number of patients who leave the West Campus Emergency Center without being seen was reduced by 80 percent during the urgent care’s operating hours.

“We are thrilled with the strong start our West Campus Urgent Care has had so far,” Smith said. “It definitely reaffirms that this was the right decision for our patients, as we provide the right care, at the right place, at the right time, at the right cost.”
