Expanding care for mothers and babies
Texas Children’s has embarked on a phased, multi-year expansion plan for the Pavilion for Women to ensure that we can continue providing the highest quality care for mothers and babies.
Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women first opened its doors in 2012. It is home to Texas Children’s Fetal Center®— a national leader in the diagnosis and treatment of abnormalities in unborn and newborn infants — and a level IV neonatal intensive care unit. In 2019, the Pavilion for Women was designated a level IV maternal care facility, the highest level of care available. Over the past several years, it has exceeded its delivery capacity while maintaining unmatched clinical outcomes.
“Our current expansion plan will not only allow us to increase our delivery volume by about 30 percent, but will also give us more space for specialized clinics and specific programs for women at every stage of life,” said Dr. Michael Belfort, Texas Children’s OB/GYN-in-Chief.
The $201 million expansion plan includes transforming the former Baylor Clinic, located at 6620 Main Street, into part of Texas Children’s campus in the Texas Medical Center. This addition will provide Texas Children’s with an additional 190,000 square feet of usable space, and it will connect to the Pavilion for Women via a sky bridge. The expansion will proceed in three phases, with full completion expected in 2024.
Phase 1: Relocation of the Women’s Assessment Center from the 11th floor of the Pavilion to the first floor; backfill of the 11th floor with a 14-bed induction and observation suite
- Phase 2: Relocation of outpatient OB/GYN practices from the Pavilion for Women to the newly renovated building
- Phase 3: Backfill of the Pavilion for Women with additional inpatient care capacity
“Patients come from all across the country and around the world to access our world-renowned medical experts and the full continuum of care we offer mothers and babies,” Belfort said. “We are looking forward to increasing our capacity to offer the best care to every woman and child, from the healthiest to the most critically ill.”
